Why Your AC is Always Running

If your AC is running all the time, it's probably because something is wrong - and a constantly-running AC will drive up your energy bills! In this blog, we will discuss some of the most common reasons why an AC may be running non-stop, as well as provide tips on how to fix these issues.

So if your air conditioner has been driving you crazy with its constant noise and rising expense, stay tuned! We're going to help you get it fixed once and for all.

Problem 1: Your Fan is Always On

On the thermostat, there are usually two or three settings for the fan: On, Auto, and sometimes Circulate. If your fan is set to “Auto,” then it will only come on when the air conditioner is running. This is the most energy-efficient setting because it minimizes how often the fan runs.

However, if your fan is set to “On,” then it will run continuously, even when the air conditioner is off. This can waste a lot of energy and may be the reason your AC is running around the clock. If you have your fan set to “On,” try switching it to “Auto” and see if that makes a difference.

If you have your fan set to “Circulate,” it will also run continuously. This setting is typically found on newer thermostats in homes with central air conditioning and multiple rooms so that the air can be circulated throughout the house.

Problem 2: Poor Efficiency

One of the biggest causes of an air conditioner running all day is poor efficiency. This can be for a number of reasons, including:

  • Dirty air filters
  • Clogged evaporator coils
  • Leaky ducts
  • Inadequate insulation

If you skipped your annual tune-up, some maintenance may be required in order to bring your unit back up to peak efficiency. An HVAC professional can help you diagnose the problem and make the necessary repairs.
